When Tony Wilkes, who would become Hall’s chief of corrections, started as an officer, around the time that Friedmann was jailed, he received no training. The most sadistic of his colleagues formed a group, known as the Goon Squad, which beat inmates. The torture took place on an elevator that had a habit of getting stuck.
